Fresh Fish Shop Bandon Goes From Strength To Strength

Clonakilty native, Lar McCarthy has made tremendous progress since opening his state of the art premises, Fresh Fish Shop Bandon, last October. Lar is well known for his company Atlantic Catch and for selling fish at Harrington’s Corner, at the bottom of McCurtain Hill, Clonakilty, every Friday. Lar comes from a family steeped in tradition of selling fish at this corner, dating back as far as 1821. His mother, grandfather, great grandmother and other ancestors all stood at the “fish corner” before him. Lar is the 6th generation to stand at this corner.

Anyone who travels the roads of West Cork will often see Lar’s two distinctive Atlantic Catch, mobile, refrigerated vans in the area. One van deals with wholesale, bringing the freshest of fish to the region’s hotels and restaurants, the other van delivers fish door to door. In line with tradition, Lar can still be found at the Fish Corner, Clonakilty every Friday. He also operates a fish stall outside Cottrell’s shop, Ballinhassig on a Friday.

The Fresh Fish Shop Bandon is most impressive, with no expense spared in the design of the shop or the professional kitchen at the rear of the premises. There is always an excellent selection of fish available, collected fresh from the fishing fleet in Castletownbere, Union Hall and Kinsale. The freshest of fish is carefully selected and filleted at the company’s processing unit in Reenascreena.

Lar works a long day and is extremely busy but he has a great team behind him who have all contributed to the company’s success.

Lar employs a full time chef, Sean McNamara, who creates the company’s signature dishes in the kitchen at the Bandon shop. Dishes include fish cakes, fish pie, chowder, seafood pasta and an array of other value added products. This is an extremely useful service for busy shoppers having a choice of ready-to-go healthy nourishing meals that can be served with very little effort.

On Thursdays and Fridays the Bandon shop carries a hot seafood take away menu. Everything is prepared by Sean on the premises from scratch using the best of local, seasonal produce.

The shop also has a selection of seafood stir-fries, homemade fish fingers, salmon in a Hollandaise sauce and much more. There is also a selection of interesting delicatessen products such as olive oils, sauces, soups, etc.

Lar often runs fish filleting courses so aspiring cooks can learn more about the fish and how to make the most of it. With the help of chefs Sean and Matt Williamson Lar offers Seafood Cookery Classes throughout the year.

Lar is at the helm of a positive and dynamic business, with an enthusiastic team behind him, his company is the real deal and is justifiably a finalist in the BIM Seafood Retail Business Award 2018
